One Dress a Week Challenge
June: Grey
Murdoch Mysteries (s7 e1, "Murdoch Ahoy") / Helene Joy as Dr. Julia Ogden
I think of this as the equivalent to the Scarlet Pimpernel grey redingote, just from a hundred years or so later: it's a practical traveling outfit in grey, with stripes and some white at the neck. It looks very neatly put together, and the striped band on the skirt ties the top and bottom halves together nicely.
The design of the sleeves is interesting and attractive, with the cuffs looped up and turned back to show the striped material, while the white of the under-layer peeks through. I've included a closeup to show the details.

Napoleon entertains some children on St. Helena
Tumblr media
The Emperor sent for the children of the Grand Marshal. They had not seen him for a few days, and they ran, full of joy. As soon as the playing began, they frolicked around him; they took him as arbiter of their discussions. "Is it not so, Sire, that my cup-and-ball is better?" "No, mine is. - It is mine," replied a third, "I leave it to Your Majesty to decide." The Emperor decided, laughed, and the hullabaloo went on. "You are too noisy, I will not keep you for dinner."
"No, no! We will not make any more noise." They made less noise.
Napoleon kept them for dinner, placed little Hortense beside him, and served her; but when appetites were satisfied, the discussion was renewed, each one claiming to have been more skillful. The Emperor was again judge. "Isn't it true, Sire? You saw it, didn't you?" Napoleon, overwhelmed, did not know whom to answer, and laughed all the more.
"Be quiet," he said to them, "You are little chatterers. That's right, be quiet, you are making too much noise." And they all began again, accusing each other of shouting too much, until finally the table was cleared and he sent them away.
"You will have us called tomorrow, won't you, Sire?"
"So you like to play with me?"
"Yes! yes!" they cried.

I'm not certain yet, but if I have the time, I may re-watch all the Murdoch Mysteries Christmas Specials during the Holidays. And if I do, I shall start with A Merry Murdoch Christmas, the very first one!

“...at the end of the book, she had learned a secret from it: which is that ‘having’ paradise isn’t impossible; because ‘being in paradise’ doesn’t mean having your residence there; it means knowing that you can return there. ... It’s a state of joy which prolongs itself throughout the whole life of those people who have the strength to be wild...
Very near and very hard to approach in reality. Because it’s not paradise that one loses; it’s the desire to be there, which war succeeds in making us forget. For the state of being-in-paradise, which seems so simple when one is there, this state requires the first great intelligence, the kind that thinks and understands on the other side of forgetfulness and of things neglected by thought, before any absent-mindedness; requires the ultrasensitive intelligence of proximities; capable of discovering the treasures of life lying in store under the window, within our reach, within our embrace; requires the first, the prime intelligence, the universal, the very-fragile kind, with its very broad, feathery antennae covered with sensory cells which enable it to detect the sources of the very great joys that are quivering in the immediate invisibility.”
